HIDE SHIELD, LATE 19TH CENTURY. As per owner, of Apache origin. Rawhide disc bound by a bent wood hoop, and wooden grip both wrapped with rawhide thongs; ermine pelt (a war symbol) suspended from bottom, carrying strap attached at top. Painted motifs consist of a green disc outlined in black, four short undulating lines at the cardinal directions, and four dots with red centers at the semi-cardinal points. Driebe 1997, pg 236.
