P. S. DOWNES (American, 19th/20th Century) “BRIGANTINE “SAMPSON” OF NEW YORK CITY, N.Y.”. Mixed media of pencil, ink, watercolor & crayon, depiction of a three-mast ship sailing right to left flying the U.S. flag and ships pennant. Seven crew members aboard and sails are full. Blue sky with birds and outlined clouds. The bottom having a presentation “Presented to Miss Ma Mead from P.S. Downes of Portland, Maine Often Shall I Think of You, God Bless You Scotty”. A banner title below ship and in far right corner a cartouche with hand written “By an old sailor 79 years of age 54 years at sea June 10th 1889″. A hand and arm pointing to the inscription comes from the left hand side above which is a mermaid. Presented in an antique rope decorated gold frame with gold liner. SIZE: Sight: 13-1/2″ x 21-1/2″. Image: 11″ x 19-3/4”. CONDITION: Some repaired tears in spots but generally very good. 9-22476 (400-600)
