REMEMBER THE MAINE PRINTER’S PROOF. Classic illustration of the U.S.S. Maine battleship portrayed within a symbolic border of crossed canons, American Stars and Stripes and Federal shields. The U.S.S. Maine inexplicably exploded and sank in Havana Harbor on the night of Feb. 15, 1898 while protecting American interests during a Cuban revolt against Spanish colonial rule. American newspapers speculated it was Spanish sabotage and fueled a national sentiment of “Remember the Maine – to Hell with Spain” that ultimately contributed to leading the U.S. into the Spanish-American War. This lot also includes a tin tray produced by Shonk of the same image. SIZE: Paper litho image size is 12-1/2″ dia in the frame; tin tray is 12″ dia.
