LATE 19TH CENTURY SIOUX FLUTE WITH PAINTED PARFLECHE CASE AND PHOTOGRAPH. 1) Flute: Indian made of split and hollowed cedar bound with three bands of sinew; red and white ribbon streamers and painted stop carved with buffalo head in low relief. Series of red & black triangles painted around opening. Plains Indian men customarily played flutes of this type for courting and general musical entertainment. This flute is being played by Geronimo Gomez in the photograph entitled Love Song, at Taos, New Mexico-1914 [Driebe, 1997: 83]. Size: 22-1/4” long. CONDITION: No apparent breakage or damage. 2) Case—parfleche (Indian-prepared rawhide) painted in classic Sioux designs and colors applied to parfleche containers of various types. Size: 23-1/2” long x 6-1/4” wide. CONDITION: No apparent damage. Surface of case irregular as is typical for parfleche containers. Light surface soiling. 3) Photograph—matted: subject is Geronimo Gomez, Taos Indian man [Driebe, 1997: 83]. SIZE: Overall size 11” x 14”, photograph is 7” x 9-1/2”. 4-55251 (4,000-6,000)
