WOMAN’S MOCCASINS, PUEBLO, CIRCA 1900. Native tanned elk hide uppers, rawhide soles. All of the Southwestern Pueblo tribes made this genre of “high-top” moccasins for women. Style incorporates a legging-like extension that wraps around the wearer’s leg below the knee; the top folds down in the manner of a tunic skirt. Note the “stake loops” (left from the tanning process) around the bottom margin. Front part of the foot area of this pair is painted with yellow ocher; the ankle and heel areas are lightly painted green. Driebe 1997, pg 336. Size: Right moccasin extended 29” high x 18” wide. CONDITION: No apparent damage, general use wear and light soiling. 4-55259 BL40 (2,000-2,500)
