INDIAN DECORATED MODIFIED SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR POSSIBLY CONNECTED TO GERONIMO. Bored out to 20 ga. Serial number is defaced. Bbl cut to 22”. Stock has been stamped with a punch design of various figures, which owner states are Gan symbols used by Geronimo. There are numbers of brass tacks stamped into the stock at various places. Cartouches are also stamped. There are four filed grooves on each side of the forearm. These grooves are similar to the four grooves filed on each edge of bow in lot #3548.. The “Gan symbols” also are similar to the symbols on the knife handle of lot #3545. This is accompanied by a canvas belt with large brass tacks, with loops for 20 ga. cartridges. A much later Army coat button is riveted to the tongue. Rear sight has been removed and various parts replaced. Some paperwork accompanies this lot about Indian modified guns, also comparing symbols on gun to Geronimo used Gan symbols. According to historian Grenville Goodwin, Army Scout John Robe tells about how Gen George Crook tried to contact Geronimo by taking his gun to shoot birds near where the Apache were camped. The hostile leaders confronted him, “grabbed his gun away and took the birds he had shot”. Moon tells this to be the same gun.
