HISTORIC PRESENTATION SWORD TO FAMOUS APACHE WARRIOR VICTORIO. Victorio was a fierce Apache leader known for his bravery and also a very skilled strategist. From the period of 1863-1880, he and his band fought the Mexicans and the Americans. According to Thrapp (Vittorio pgs 104-125-26, 129 and note 50), in October of 1870, an Indian special agent William Arny, was sent to Warm Springs to induce the Apaches into signing a peace treaty. It was common at such peace conferences to present the chiefs with peace medals however at this conference Victorio (and perhaps others) received a presentation sword. According to further family history, the sword was acquired by Geronimo who traded or gave it to a mule packer and interpreter named Frank Huston. Later the sword was acquired by Carl Moon. The sword is the standard non regulation 19th century European saber with no identifying makers marks. One side of the blade etched “VICTORIO” with a sprig of leaves on either side and near the hilt a teepee. The reverse side with crossed arrows near the hilt and followed by a long etched band “COUNCIL OF PEACE AT WARM SPRINGS, OCTOBER 1870”. SIZE: 33″ l. CONDITION: Blade is gray with scattered brown rust dispersed over the entire length on both sides. The leather grip mostly deteriorated to reveal the wood beneath. Brass much toned and patinaed. No scabbard. 4-55221 (20,000-40,000)
