OLYMPIA BREWING CO. PRINTER’S PROOF. This rare chromolithograph represents a pivotal point in the history of the Olympia Brewing Co. The brewery was originally founded as the “Capital Brewing Co.” in 1896 by Leopold F. Schmidt on the banks of the Deschutes River in Tumwater, WA. The brewery changed its name to the “Olympia Brewing Co.” in 1902 when it began using the slogan “It’s The Water”, to emphasize the quality of their beer due to the purity of water used to brew it. A production tray with this design is not known, but one very similar is. It has a green background, a slightly different lettering style, and includes the slogan “It’s The Water” just below the word “Tumwater”. It’s possible that this proof image was produced in 1902 for approval by Leopold Schmidt, and was subsequently modified into the production tray known to have been produced at that time. Chas. W.
