MOCCASINS, SIOUX, LATE 19TH CENTURY. Native tanned cowhide, rawhide soles, fully beaded uppers with long tapering tongue; beaded in classic Sioux style—border designs representing tip is and possibly meat drying racks. CONDITION: At some point the instep area of both was slit for three inches toward the toes, and a row of beads removed for someone to be able to wear this pair. Note that the beaded tongue would essentially cover these breaks when worn. Deep scoring of the soles probably increased the flexibility and / or traction. Note small spot of transparent glue on upper rows of beadwork on outer side of left moccasin – possibly to stabilize broken stitches; half inch tear in side of left moccasin at base of tongue. Hide stiff. SIZE: 10-1/4” length. 4-57091 BL64 (800-1,200)
