CEREMONIAL MOCCASINS, SIOUX, CIRCA 1880’S. During the last two decades of the 19th century, the Lakota (Western Sioux) arts entered a baroque stage. Entire surfaces of clothing and objects were decorated with beadwork—including the soles of some moccasins. Although such moccasins are popularly called “burial moccasins,” numerous historic photographs illustrate people wearing moccasins with the soles beaded. Likewise, surviving examples exhibit wear on the beadwork of the soles. CONDITION: Hide somewhat stiff; one inch tear in hide at tongue of right moccasin, four missing rows of beads on right moccasin near perimeter. NOTE: Beads worn away at heel and ball areas of both moccasins, resulting from actual use. SIZE: 9-1/2” long. 4-57090 BL63 (3,000-4,000)
