FOLK ART PENGUIN CARVING ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES HART. Second quarter 20th century. This whimsical example depicting an emperor penguin with scarlet jowls, white belly and black coattails. The upturned beak highlighted in indigo. Carved on a square wooden plinth. With strong similarities in the carving and paint of those done by Charles Hart “the penguin carver”, active in the Gloucester and Essex county area of Massachusetts. SIZE: Ht 5 1/2″ CONDITION: Structure and paint surfaces original with some wear to paint at end of beak and coattails. Minor rubbing to surfaces overall, generally very good. 9-96694 (800-1,200)
