SPENCER MODEL 1865 CARBINE W/COLORADO TERRITORY MARKS. Cal. 50 Spencer. SN 25442. Usual configuration with Stabler cut-off, 20” 3-groove rnd bbl. It has standard Burnside Rifle Co. marks on top of the receiver and a “GC” cartouche is legible on the left side of the wrist; the other is not. Left side of the buttstock is stamped “U.S. / COL.TER” and someone has carved the outline of a mountain lion on the right side of the stock. This carbine is one of a shipment of 1,000 firearms received by the State of Colorado in 1868, along with 100,000 rds of ammunition. Firearms were about equally divided between rifles & carbines. Very few of these marked items have ever been encountered. CONDITION: Fine. Overall dark brown patina on the bbl with a couple of spots of light surface rust and pitting. There is a filled area behind the sling swivel on the forearm with usual nicks, dings & scratches on the wood overall, otherwise the wood is sound & retains a fine hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with light pitting. 4-54960 JR751 (5,000-8,000)
