NEW ENGLAND SPLIT-BANISTER BACK SIDE CHAIR. Late quarter of the 18th century. Double tombstone arched and scalloped crest above 4 split banisters joined to the block and vase turned stiles headed by suppressed ball finials joined to the trapezoidal woven rush seat raised on frontal block and urn turned legs joined by an urn and spool turned frontal stretcher. The whole in black paint over original dark blue-green paint with subtle gold accents, the crestrail painted with the date “1776”. SIZE: 43″ h of back. CONDITION: Overall in very fine original condition. The woven seat in need of restoration. Proper lower left spindle stretcher replaced. 9-97513 (500-600)
