STEAMSHIP “CONGRESS” TIN SIGN. This is an uncommon sign to find as the “Congress” was only in service for seven years between 1913-1918. She was built in 1913 by the New York Ship Building Co. of Camden, NY at a cost of $2,000,000, and became the flagship for the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. who’s company red logos are seen on the ship’s stacks. In 1918 the Congress caught fire off the coast of Oregon on her Puget Sound to California ports route, and was severely damaged. She was sold to the China Mail Steamship Co., repaired and renamed the “Nanking”. Lithographed by the American Art Works Co., Coshocton, Ohio after the 1913 painting by Alfred F. Bishop of New Haven, CT. SIZE: Sight size 39” w. x 29” h. in frame. CONDITION: Displays in very good condition. Has had a few areas of the sky professionally in-painted; some very soft bends to lower right and upper left corners; rev. has had areas of varnish applied for no apparent reason, which comes off easily with a thumbnail. 1-10472 (750-1,000)
