STEAMSHIP “RMS MAURETANIA” SELF-FRAMED TIN SIGN. This sign originally started out in life as a sign for her sister ship the Lusitania. When the Lusitania was sunk in 1915 by a German U-boat, the tin signs which the Cunard Line had produced up to that time were recalled and the Lusitania name on the bow was painted over with “Mauretania”. This is one of those examples. SIZE: 39” w. x 28” h. CONDITION: Extensive areas throughout the sky have had professional museum quality airbrush paint restoration, but are virtually undetectable to the naked eye without a blacklight. The sign displays in very good to excellent condition with some scattered scuffs and wear to the paint on the rope braid border. 1-10473 (800-1,200)
