MAINE FOLK ART TWO-TIER SEWING BOX. Third quarter 19th century. This carved and polychrome painted folk art example surmounted by an oval pincushion covered in a crazy quilt fragment mounted upon a rectangular storage box stepped above a larger box fitted with drawer. Each mounted on a scalloped and pierced shelf with turret form finials. Decorated overall with polychrome painted subjects of berries, dolphins, and cartouches within scrolling borders. SIZE: Ht 9 3/4″ L 10 3/4″ W 7 1/4″ PROVENANCE: Inscribed beneath the drawer bottom: “Blanche Heald, Rockport, ME”. Probably Ella B. Heald known as Blanche. CONDITION: Very good original condition with good unrestored surfaces, strong colors. Some wear to edges within normal parameters. 9-96715 (2,500-3,500)
