GEORGE HAYS (American, 1854-1934) A RECENT ARRIVAL. Oil on canvas barn scene shows a mother hen with four chicks. One of the chicks is recently hatched and the egg is seen off to the side under straw. Signed lower right, “G. Hays”. Housed in probably its original gesso-decorated gilt frame. An unusual subject matter for this predominantly “cattle” artist. SIZE: 14″h x 22″w. PROVENANCE: From an old Southern Maine Collection. CONDITION: Two in-painted spots with a few small holes and with some varnish deterioration, otherwise good. 9-94121 (1,000-2,000)
