JOHN MATTHEWS ONYX SODA FOUNTAIN. Elaborately designed, 12 flavor soda fountain dispenser constructed with book-matched cream colored banded onyx panels and fitted with Gothic inspired silver plated spigots, mixing valves and flavor name plates. What makes this particular example so unique is that it was constructed using the mineral onyx which provided a higher polish, harder surface, and richer look than the more commonly used marble found in competitors fountains. This particular example is labeled the “Lawrence” and was produced by the John Matthews Apparatus Company of New York City. It’s a counter top model, intended to sit on the back bar of the soda fountain where flavored syrups would be combined with “Vichy”, a carbonated mineral water, “Seltzer” or “Geyser” waters. John Matthews (1808-1870) was an English-born American who is credited with designing the first compact soda fountain in New York, circa 1832. The John Matthews Apparatus Co. was a subsidiary of the John Matthews Co. and was only in business between the years of 1891-1905, which dates production of this fountain. Accompanied by custom wood carrying crate. SIZE: Approximately 4 ft w x 2 ft h. CONDITION: Displays well and appears fairly complete. However, the marble/onyx has been repaired in several places. 1-12043 (2,500-4,500) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2012 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
