BARANGER MOTION DISPLAY: GEM MINE W/ ORIGINAL SHIPPING CRATE. Throughout the Roaring Twenties prior to the Great Depression, America was enjoying great prosperity. Businesses were thriving, and run-of-the-mill lackluster window displays just weren’t cutting it anymore. To stand out among the competition storeowners were looking to be more inventive and innovative to draw in business. To that end, in 1925, a group of talented artists and artisans came together and Baranger Studios was born. As the company grew, they began to focus their attention on the flourishing jewelry industry. Eventually a system was in place where there was a regular rotation of a wide variety of displays making their way to various jewelry stores around the country. Numbering over 250 unique and imaginative displays, they became highly collectible and are still sought after to this day. This lovely display depicts a gem mine featuring eight articulated workers busily harvesting stones from a rocky outcropping. Realistically rendered, it is affixed with a plaque reading “Gems from Mine to You”. Pictured in the book T. Kitahara Collection–Motion Display (page 85), it also retains its original shipping crate. A rare and unusual advertising display that showcases the company’s humor and creativity. SIZE: 22″ w x 16-1/2″ h x 11″ d. CONDITION: Overall very good to near excellent with various minor paint chips, predominantly to the gold painted base/surround, likely some typical studio touch-ups. Some characters show chipping to their faces. Shipping crate, though structurally sound, shows signs of wear and tear commensurate with age. 1-11690 (3,500-5,500) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2012 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
