EUGENE CICERIE (French, 1813-1890) “RIO DE JANEIRO DE CASTELLA”. Eugène Cicéri (1812-1890) and Philippe Benoist (1813-after 1905), lithographers, published by George Luezinger. Outstanding colored lithograph showing the port of Rio de Janeiro with many ships, the city and mountains beyond. In the foreground is a shepherd with goats and people standing and seated in a grassy area. The view overlooks the city onto the harbor. Also the following lines printed in margin “LITH. PAR EUG. CICERI ET PH. BENOIST” and “IMP. LEMERCIER, PARIS” and also “PUBLIE A RIO DE JANEIRO CHEZ G. LEUZINGER”. Also “PRIS AU DAGUERREOTYPE”. Also there is a “10” in the upper right corner. Housed in a modern gilt frame with cutout matte. This is one from a portfolio of 10 executed in 1862. SIZE: Total print: 26″ x 35-1/2″. Image: 17-1/2″ x 27-1/2″. CONDITION: The print has been glued to foam board. It has repairs to tears at middle right which goes 3″ into the image. Bottom left with tear 3-1/2″ into image. Light foxing throughout. The margin has a thick layer of glue where a previous matte had been affixed. The colors are strong. Examined out of frame. 9-96386 (2,500-4,000)
