EXHIBITION QUALITY FACTORY ENGRAVED REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 43 Spanish. SN not visible. Spectacular & rare, one of only four known, presentation quality rolling block military musket. It has 35-1/8” rnd bbl with square base dovetailed front sight & a saber bayonet mount on right side. Rear sight is standard musket type with a sliding v-notch. Mounted with very beautiful, feather crotch cut, uncheckered, American walnut with full length forestock, three bands with spring keepers, nosecap & slotted head wiping rod. Receiver, all three bands, nosecap & buttplate tang have full coverage, Nimschke style, intertwined, foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background. The area over the chamber is engraved by another hand. The other three known pieces are identically engraved. All of engraved pieces have residue of gold wash. Left side of buttstock has a very fancy, thick silver plate, secured with four silver pins, 4-3/4” wide x 2-5/8” high, with a long Spanish inscription & date “10 August 1870”. This rifle was manufactured in 1870 as a gift to Spanish government in appreciation for a large contract for military rifles. Silver plaque was added in Spain as a presentation to the Count of Valmeseda to commemorate the capture of the Cuban general, Pedro Figueredo, by Col. Caniral on August 10, 1870. Figueredo was a prominent figure in Cuban insurrection against Spain in 1870. Of the other three known examples, one is in private hands; another at the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Cody, WY, and the last is in the Remington Museum. Provenance: Martin Sonne, Ron Peterson. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains 95-97% strong orig blue with a few nicks between top two bands that correspond to a gouge in wood. Bands retain most of their orig silver plating with thin gold wash. Receiver retains about 90% silver plating with some flaking on trigger guard & bottom of receiver. Breechblock & hammer retain about 50% gold wash. Keeper, breechblock & hammer pins retain about 80% niter blue. Buttplate retains about 90% orig silver. Wood is sound with minor nicks, scratches & dings and retains about 95% of its beautiful, orig, hand rubbed, oil finish. Silver plaque is fine. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with a few spots of pitting. 4-60192 JR353 (7,000-10,000)
