CHARLES COLE MARKHAM (AMERICAN, 1837 – 1907) THE SHY ONE. Oil on board, interior scene shows two young girls leaning against wall, one with hand to face looking away. The end of a bench is seen which probably indicates this is a school room setting and both may be receiving punishment. Signed bottom right, “C.C. MARKHAM”. Housed in a gesso-decorated gilt frame.
