SIGNED (19th Century) THE MEND. Oil on canvas interior scene shows a young woman seated at a table mending a piece of clothing. A candlestick, scissors and spools of thread are on the stand and a fireplace mantle is behind her with various articles atop. Appears to have an illegible signature bottom left. Housed in a period gesso decorated frame (some losses). SIZE: 14″ x 12″. PROVENANCE: From an East Sangerville, Maine private collection, by descent from Dr. Samuel Cox Hooker (1864, Brenchley England -1935, Brooklyn Heights, New York), a sugar chemist, magician, and art collector, to the present owner, a great-grand-daughter. Acquired by Dr. Hooker in Paris. CONDITION: Some inpainting, consolidation and craquelure, fair to good. 9-94928 (1,000-2,000)
