BERLEUR FLINTLOCK DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 20 ga. 32-5/16” ribbed bbls. Marked “Berleur” on the right sideplate, “Michel” on the left, and “CANON · DAMASSE · A · LATURQUE” inlayed in gold on the bbl rib. All metal has some engraving. Bbls have 12-½” of engraving at the rear of the bbl and another 2-½” all gold inlay at the front sight. Bbl tang is sculpted with flowers and engraved with vignettes of a swan and another of lightning bolts. Sides of the hammer are engraved with fire breathing dragons. Rear of the right lock has a crouching dog. Left has a barking dog. Trigger guard finial is a fawn holding a tray of vegetables and game. Trigger guard has two dogs attacking a stag. Buttplate tang has a seated animal. Edges of the buttplate are sculpted in flowers, diamonds, and a shell at top and bottom. Fancy wood stock has a very large cheekpiece. Wrist of the stock is carved with scales instead of checkering, ending in a large dragon’s head with ivory eyes. Forearm checkering is also carved in scales. There are eye for swivels but they are missing. Second swan is engraved on the heavily sculpted tailpipe. There is a metal seal on the trigger guard for customs use, certifying that the gun is over 100 years old. Pans are lined with platinum & the touch holes are gold. CONDITION: Retains about 80% of a brown finish on the bbls. Some moderate pitting at the breech. Brown finish is probably redone. Engraving is still sharp. Balance of the metal is finished bright and has scattered light pitting. Wood has minor dents and scratches. Mechanically fine. 4-57031 FS128 (6,500-10,000)
