O. D. JENNINGS PAYOUT PINBALL MACHINE. In the mid-1930s Jennings created a “PAYOUT” pinball machine. This particular example has a sportsman motif with ducks, rabbits, pheasants, squirrels, etc. One would shoot a ball in hopes of getting it into certain holes, such as the squirrel, pheasant, etc. If, for instance, you landed in the rabbit holes, you were awarded six tokens and/or six nickels, depending on how the payout system was loaded. Unlike pinball machines of today, these early machines contained no flippers. A little minor twitching, a little shaking, or sheer luck would drop the pinball into the appropriate hole. Of course, these machines were easy to tilt and thus voided any possible reward/payout. Internally quite simple by nature, simple electric contacts indicated the holes in which the balls dropped. Thus the machine would “know” if two balls landed in the duck holes allowing you to win three tokens. One could win only one reward, only the highest winning combination would pay out. Again, this is Jennings’ attempt to navigate gambling laws by declaring this machine to be a matter of skill and clearly stating that “no gambling was allowed”…ha ha ha. SIZE: 42″ h. x 18″ w. x approx. 39” d. CONDITION: Overall pristine original condition. Two exterior aluminum leg caps have minor damage (repaired cracks). Small cash box door possible replacement. Mechanics/electric untested, yet quite simple and most likely in working order. 1-10277 (1,500-2,500)
