CLASSICAL EMPIRE MAPLE BUTLER’S CHEST, PROBABLY NEW YORK. Circa mid-19th century. The rectangular top applied with molded splashguard above the conforming case, the upper long drawer with hinged front opening to a writing surface with leather insert and a bank of pigeonholes, projecting above three cockbeaded long drawers. The top drawer with mahogany cross-banding and all drawers with bird’s-eye maple fronts, flanked by cyma-form pilasters continuing to rolled frontal feet. The case sides with recessed panels. SIZE: 56-1/2″ overall h, 46″ chest h x 47-1/2″ l x 22-1/2″ d. PROVENANCE: Collection of Elwyn Dearborn, Medford, NJ & Portland, ME. CONDITION: With professional restoration to veneers, restored diagonal splits in top at rear of case, otherwise very good overall with nice honey-brown color and original elements. 9-95949 (1,000-2,000)
