THE KELLEY “IMPROVED” TRADE STIMULATOR W/GUM VENDOR. Manufactured in the early 20th century for use in country stores, saloons, etc., this gambling device awarded the player a stick of gum every time he played. This subtle dispensing of gum navigated the gambling laws of the time, indicating that this was a mere gum vendor and not a gambling device. Five reels, two of which are blank and the other three having various numbers, the concept being totaling the numbers of the three reels and then viewing the award card to see if one was a winner. Originally there was a very simple marquee (made of turned wire/rods) sitting atop the machine which is now missing. A great money maker for the merchant, as there was virtually no maintenance required other than restocking the gum and an occasional pay-out to the prospective gambler. The oak cabinet has been refinished and iron castings have been replated. Oak paneled back door is a quality replacement. SIZE: 16-1/2″ h. x 13-1/2″ w. x 9″ d. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus and working, reel strips are in good to very good original condition, some staining and fading. 1-10306 (1,600-2,500)
