STERLING SILVER MUG BY PORTER BLANCHARD FROM THE YACHT “ARANER”. The Araner was owned by motion picture director John Ford and was thus named in honor of the Aran Islands where his wife’s family had come from. In the 1930s the yacht served as a place where Ford could escape the bustle of Hollywood in the company of friends. It was later given to the US Navy and was placed in service in 1942 with the designation USS Araner (IX-57). Delivered back to Mrs. John Ford in 1944 where she sold it in 1971 and went through several name changes and owners. The silver mug having a “c” shaped handle and applied “Araner” to bottom edge of mug. Signed on the base. Accompanying the mug is an envelope inscribed “Lee” and a folded note inscribed “From him, to me, to you-Love Always Barb” (Barbara Ford). Porter Blanchard Silversmiths were known for their hand wrought sterling pieces and were based in Calabasas, California. SIZE: 4-1/2″ h. PROVENANCE: Lee Marvin Estate from Pamela Marvin.
