ADELINE OPPENHEIM GUIMARD (American, 1872-) A SUMMERS AFTERNOON REST. Outstanding large oil on canvas balcony scene shows a young woman with her two children seated and standing next to a table having fresh fruit and lemonade. The mother is wearing an elegant white summer dress with a black fashion hat and having a teal blue parasol shielding her from the sun. Also seated at the table is her youngest daughter wearing a white dress and pink shoes and she wears a pink bow in her auburn hair. She is seated in a wooden highchair and on the ground beside is her straw bonnet and stick game beside. Behind her is the older daughter wearing a pink dress and fancy white hat. She holds a tennis racket and looks out over a colorful French landscape. The whole scene is shaded by tall trees and is signed bottom right “A. Oppenheim 190 (?)”. Housed in a gilt wood frame with linen and gilt liner. The frame retains “The Fenway Art Center, Boston, Massachusetts” label. Stretcher having a New York brand. Adeline Oppenheim was a woman of means who resided in New York City and Paris. She exhibited at the Paris Salon and is housed in various American museums. She married Hector Guimard, who was a famous French architect in the Art Nouveau style. They lived in Paris in the avenue Mozart and they were thought to have fled France in the late 1930’s to New York City. SIZE: 58″ x 43″. PROVENANCE: Estate of E. P.
