MILLS CAST-IRON OPERATORS BELL SLOT MACHINE. In the earlier part of the 20th century, Mills introduced the 3-reel slot machine. Three versions of this machine were manufactured, but basically all were the same excepting the name on the front door. This particular machine, “THE OPERATORS BELL” – as well as “MILLS LIBERTY BELL” & “LIBERTY BELL GUM FRUIT” – is in an ornate cast-iron cabinet. The side view depicts the skyline of New York City with the Statue of Liberty in the foreground; on the upper part of the side casting is a large bell in a belfry. The cast-iron back door (of newer vintage) has torches on either side with a bell in the middle and, of course, the top casting has the trademark owl that is synonymous with the Mills Novelty Co. Normally the iron cabinet is nickel plated. This example has been refinished in a blackened copper and is most attractive. Mechanism contains original tin reel strips and is in functioning order. Original marquee is present but, typical of this machine, the rear supporting legs were damaged and have been re-attached. SIZE: 14-1/2″ w. x 13″ d. x 21″ h. CONDITION: Overall condition is very fine plus, replaced slide behind gooseneck of newer vintage. Fan blade on clock is loose and needs to be secured. Iron castings appear to be free of damage. Lower front casting at one time had some corrosion/pitting. 1-10310 (5,000-6,000)
