UNMARKED, PROBABLY GERMAN, FLINTLOCK BOAR RIFLE. Cal. 58. NSN. Short heavy boar rifle with 26″ swamped oct bbl that has German silver front sight & 2-leaf 3-position express rear sight with six firing apertures. Bbl has fine engraving on the top three flats at the muzzle & at the breech end of the bbl & the tang is matching engraved. Lockplate & hammer have light border engraving with flourishes of arabesque patterns. It is mounted in an extremely fine tiger striped maple stock with one pin through brass escutcheons and has a carved bone nose cap. It has brass furniture with fine inlaid side plate. Entire bottom of the stock, from the rear of the lockplate forward to the nose pipe is a repoussed brass sheet attached with brass pins. Trigger guard is engraved and has brass finger rest. Buttplate is somewhat plain with a filigree toe plate and comb plate that extends down both sides of the stock. Wooden patch box cover is also covered with brass filigree. Stock has incised carving & decorations the full length of the forestock with light patterns around the top tang and heavier patterns around the deep cheek piece with leaf & vine patterns on the edge of the cheek piece. Area around the patch box is inlaid with a different colored wood and also has incised carved patterns. Bottom of the forestock has two filigreed & faceted brass guides containing, what appears to be, an orig brass tipped ramrod. Altogether a very elaborate & beautiful German hunting rifle. CONDITION: About very good. Metal is a cleaned silver/gray patina turning light brown with some fine light pitting. Stock has hairline cracks on both sides of the bbl channel and before & after the lockplate. There is a crack in the left side panel and overall the stock shows heavy wear. Pin stand is detached from the bottom of the bbl. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with some scattered light pitting in the grooves. 4-55777 JR336 (3,000-6,000)
