ENCORE COIN-OPERATED AUTOMATED BANJO. Back in the earlier part of the 20th century, creativity seemed to be at its peak. A multitude of varied and different machines were created, from gambling to arcade to music. This particular machine features a banjo inside an elaborate oak case. When a coin is deposited, the banjo would play a tune. It almost seems absurd and/or unbelievable that a machine like this could be created! The reality is that a paper roll similar to those used on player pianos was responsible for the action of the banjo. Looking at the machine, the Encore banjo is enclosed behind a panel of glass. As the coin is deposited as the curved metal “fingers” pluck away at the banjo to create a rendition of popular songs of the period. Obviously this machine was placed in choice locations of locations, and not just some penny arcade–most likely an exclusive hotel or other places of prominence. The cabinetry is an oak cabinet with much attention to detailing such as inset panels, fancy trims and moldings, serpentine opening front, and cast metal grills in place on front and sides to let the music within escape into the room. These machines are extremely rare and not many have survived. SIZE: 83″ h x 26″ w x 24″ d. CONDITION: Machine has had total overall restoration inside and out. Internal wood barrel covering the mechanics and music roll has been replaced. Wood panel at the rear of the machine is also of newer vintage. Machine is functional, but should be tuned. 1-10404 (50,000-75,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
