P. S. DOWNES (American, 19th/20th Century) SCHOONER “ADDIE TOWNSEND”. Mixed media, watercolor, crayon, pen & pencil, depicts the five-mast schooner sailing right to left. An interesting folk art rendition shows the steam sailor with ten crew-members, two of which are climbing the mast. Each mast has a flag or pennant. A large American flag flies off the stern. A banner title with an interesting cartouche surrounded by characters including Scottie the Sailor, a man with a round table and chair, and a chicken. The inscription is as follows: “By an aged sailor and soldier 76 years of age and 45 years on the Atlantic, Pacific & Indian Oceans Respectfully P.S. Downes, July 26th, 1892″. Housed in a modern gilt carved wood frame. SIZE: Sight: 13-1/2″ x 21-1/2″. Image: 11-1/2″ x 19-1/2”. CONDITION: Generally very good. 9-22476-5 (400-600)
