P. S. DOWNES (American, 19th/20th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “CHARLES HENRY TRALL”. Mixed media, pencil, ink, crayon, & watercolor, depicts the four-mast, four-stack steam sailor sailing right to left with nine crew members aboard. Two American flags and ship pennant. The front flag “Excursion Steamer”, an interesting legend below with a snake saying “Clear the Course, I Am Coming”. Also a cartouche “By an old salt, 77 years of age, 45 years at sea, Respectfully P.S. Downes, Now wrecked on land among comrades”. Housed in a gilt modern wood frame. SIZE: Sight: 13-1/4″ x 21-1/2″.
