SIGNED M. FORDNEY (MELCHIOR FORDNEY) KENTUCKY-STYLE INCISED CARVED FLINTLOCK SMOOTHBORE RIFLE. Cal. 54. 48-1/8” part oct bbl. Lockplate is deeply stamped “DREPPERT” in front of the hammer. Top of the bbl is faintly scratched in script “M Fordney”. Fordney appears on the tax list of Lancaster City in 1805 and was a gunsmith until about 1846 when he was murdered by a neighbor. Henry Leman, apprenticed with Fordney. Various Dreppert’s worked in and about Lancaster City in 1787 up to 1846 and beyond. Stock is incised carved behind, on and forward of the wrist on both sides. The forestock also with incise carving. CONDITION: Bbl and lock have an even rust/brown patina. Brass furniture is lighter. Stock in general, very good condition with the exception of a couple of small chips. The small tip of the brass trigger guard is missing. Incised carving is very smooth. 4-56826 (4,000-6,000)
