FINE NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, SAMPLER BY MARY TODD, DATED 1802. Executed in a variety of green, blue, pink, beige, cream, and brown silk stitches on a linen ground with rows of alphabet separated by various examples of stitchery above rows of verse over the lines Mary Todd born April 2 1792 wrought this Sampler in The eleventh year of her age Newbury Port Dec 1802 above an ornately wrought panel depicting two fruit trees on a hill with grazing sheep, feeding birds, and butterflies centering a floral-filled urn, the whole within a border of scrolling berry vinery. SIZE: 21-1/4″ x 17-1/2″ PROVENANCE: This sampler stayed with a family on Peak’s Island until 1975 when a descendant gave it to our consignor. CONDITION: Very fine sampler, in good overall condition, the rows of stitchery with iron ore brown dyes almost totally eradicated due to oxidation. Mounted in a later frame. 9-96539 (1,000-2,000)
