HISTORICAL REVOLUTIONARY WAR US SURCHARGED FLINTLOCK MUSKET. Cal. 73. 40-5/8” rnd bbl. There is a large “US” stamped at the rear of the lockplate. Left side of the butt is neatly carved with period original inscription “CPL / DRAKE · MILLS / J · ASHLEYS REGT · / BERKSH CTY · / MASS MA · / FT · EDWD · / 17 · 77”. There is an “M” and an “A” stamped on the sideplate, possibly for Massachusetts. There is the same “M” stamped at the rear of the bbl. Rear sling swivel holder has been ground off. Although there is a bayonet lug on the bottom of the bbl, both it and the stock have been shortened. There is a filled spring hole 4” in front of the front band spring. Bbl, under the front band, shows armory bright finish. The hammer and ramrod are old replacements. A very rare opportunity to acquire an identified Rev. War used military musket. Research of its original owner may enhance its value considerably dependant on his military involvement. This fine gun and the following six are all part of a small old collection from Pennsylvania, this item is being sold unreserved. CONDITION: Gray patina overall with light pitting, heavier at the breech. Stock has small repairs and some chips around the lockplate. Forearm has been cleaned.
