COGSWELL NEW YORK CONTRACT FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 58. 33-1/2” part oct bbl. Marked “COGSWELL / TROY” on the lockplate and “SNY” on top of the bbl. A large three lined cartouche on the left side of the stock has an unreadable first line but, “SNY / TROY” is on the other two lines. This is a heavy rifle much in the style of the 1817 US common rifle. The brass patchbox has the hinge at the top. Smith Cogswell had a contract for these rifles and an earlier contract for muskets. CONDITION: Gray patina overall. Yellow patina on the brass. Chips and repairs along the forearm. Ramrod is a replacement. Lock is crisp. 4-57312 FS184 (3,000-5,000)
