FRENCH BLACK MINSTREL PLAYER AUTOMATON. Leopold Lambert musical automaton featuring a black banjo player with papier mache head, inset brown glass eyes, wearing original black caracul wig with hands also made of papier mache. He is elaborately dressed in an antique silk brocade suit with knee length pants, a waist coat with long tails, trimmed at the cuffs on both the jacket and pants with antique lace. When wound and as the music plays, the man strums the banjo with his right hand and the head moves both side to side and up and down as well. He stands on a wooden base with lithographed design representing a tile floor. The automaton has its original key with the “LB” logo. SIZE: Overall 27-1/2″ t (70cm) including the base. Figure itself is 23″ t (58cm). CONDITION: In excellent working condition, music strong, most likely some minor paint retouch on the hands, lips and small areas throughout the face. 1-9837 (15,000-20,000)
