PATENT MODEL PIANO FORTE. Patented September 6, 1853 by William Compton, #9,988. Early low number patent of a piano component consisting of a hollow wooden sounding board plank set with brass frame with wires of varying sizes. Box is stamped “Wm. Compton, New York, 1853” Accompanied by original patent tag (good) and tag stating “Property of American Patent Models Incorporated Rockefeller Center NY, NY.” SIZE: 10-1/4″ l x 6″ w. PROVENANCE: The late Terry Wesner collection, Chelsea, Michigan.
