HENRY COLLINS BISPHAM (American, 1841-1882) “THE FORAGERS’ RETURN-1864”. Monumental oil on canvas scene shows a number of soldiers on horseback wielding swords, charging through a herd of cattle and sheep. Landscape scene shows a large waterfall with hills and woods, all under a blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower left and dated “1864”. Housed in its original magnificent gesso decorated wide museum quality frame. Frame retaining an original Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts label with the alternative title “The Raid”. This is the largest Bispham painting that we have been able to locate. A history of the artist and the painting is attached to the back. SIZE: 40-1/2″ x 72″. CONDITION: Some spot inpainting and one small closed puncture. Otherwise very good. 9-93673 (50,000-70,000)
