VERY RARE VOLCANIC ARMS ENGRAVED CARBINE. Cal. 41. SN 2683. Wonderful Volcanic carbine with 25″ oct bbl, marked on top flat “THE VOLCANIC / REPEATING ARMS CO. / PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854″, with integral magazine, brass blade front sight with wheel adjustable rear sight. Mounted with straight grain nicely figured American walnut stock with nickel-plated crescent buttplate with faceted tang. Receiver is nickel plated & has wide flourishes of foliate arabesque patterns with line & dot borders. Front flats have matching flourishes of arabesque patterns & top three flats have leaf patterns. Top tang is engraved to match. Very few of these carbines were made, probably less than 200, in three bbl lengths, 16-1/2″, 21″ & 25″ with the 25” being the most rare. This carbine has serial number upside down on right side of lower tang under wood, on lever, sideplates & most internal parts, inside top tang channel of buttstock, inside tang of buttplate & on rear edge of bbl swivel. It also has an assembly number, “149” on left side of lower tang under wood. This number was not observed anywhere else on carbine. Carbine was not completely disassembled to check all small parts. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain 25-30% thin orig blue with balance a beautiful unmolested chocolate patina. Receiver retains 70-75% orig nickel with exposed areas a dark, almost chocolate, patina. Buttplate retains about all of its orig nickel. Lever & hammer are a dark patina. Follower is a replacement. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with a scattered spot or two of light pitting. 4-57562 JR395 (30,000-50,000)
