LARGE FRENCH AUTOMATON WITH JUMEAU HEAD.

LARGE FRENCH AUTOMATON WITH JUMEAU HEAD. Late 19th Century French mechanical with mechanism contained in the torso of the doll. When key is wound and music begins to play the lady moves her head from side to side, raises her right arm up and down and holds a parian dollhouse man with molded mustache. In the left arm she holds a suspended theater containing two more parian dolls in original clothing. She turns her upturned hand from side to side and as she does so, the two dolls contained in the theater dance. The head is stamped in red on the back “Tete Jumeau Bte. S.G.B.G. 8”. She has a closed mouth, inset blue paperweight eyes and has a flat cut neck socket. She wears an antique long brown human hair wig and has been well recostumed in antique burgundy silk with lace trim in the style of the period. The exterior of the theater as well as the drapes have most likely been refurbished at some time, however excellently done. The hands are composition and are definitely from a Jumeau doll. SIZE: Overall 23” t (58cm). Doll standing 21-1/2” t (54cm). CONDITION: Overall very good to excellent with exception of one minor flake at earring hole.
