“REBEL’S REST ANTIQUES” BLACK AMERICANA TIN SIGN. Unusual, early 3-D figural metal sign in the form of a seated black man with a straw hat, the construction of which uses rivets to fasten the legs and head to body. Currently the fellow is holding a sign reading “Rebel’s Rest Antiques–Lexington, KY”, but the age of this item pre-dates the antique business. The original advertisement has since been painted over. The cataloger knows of three other similar signs for a clothing store, a brewery, and a prohibition era liquor source, so this was undoubtedly a production item that the manufacturer would add the merchant’s business advertisement to when ordered. SIZE: 34″ w. x 55″ t. CONDITION: In good condition with some surface rust, paint oxidation, scratches and scuffs. “Rebel’s Rest Antiques” is a later addition. Long thin metal straps attached to the back of the feet are currently folded up, but were likely used in mounting the sign. 1-9468 (750-1,250)
