JOURNAL OF A SURGEON ON BOARD AN AMERICAN PRIVATEER IN 1813. Circa 1813. Published in Boston in the year 1816,”A JOURNAL OF A YOUNG MAN OF MASSACHUSETTS, LATE, A SURGEON ON BOARD AN AMERICAN PRIVATEER”, presumably the journal of Benjamin M. Hartford, of Kennebunk, ME and so signed by him inside the front cover. It is a first person account of a young man signing on as an assistant surgeon aboard a privateer, the subsequent capture at sea by the British in 1813 and his internment at Melville Island, Halifax, at Chatham in England and lastly at Dartmoor Prison where they endured a massacre of American prisoners by the British guards. CONDITION: The leather-bound journal remains in good condition. There is some minor insect damage to the pages throughout. The pages with overall discoloration and foxing. 9-96456 (300-500)
