7-1/4″ SCALE MODEL “CANADIAN PACIFIC” LIVE STEAM ENGINE & TENDER. A truly amazing working scale model of a 4-6-2 locomotive & tender created by workers at the Baldwin Engine Works in their Canadian plant. Little knowledge has been passed on as to exact time of creation and/or all the workers names but included is a photocopy of a photo dated August 1960 of a bespectacled fellow standing by the completed engine and tender. The consignor purchased this in Canada a while ago but again he could not get any more info as to who the workers were or the time of creation. Due to firing up the boiler and live steam “burning” paint on boiler newer paint and lettering seems likely. One can only imagine that these workers were able to accurately copy this particular style of engine using the “real thing” as a model. Of course, working at the plant, these workers had access to an abundance of knowledge, machinery and materials that would let them replicate an engine into miniature form. Most likely the workers were able to cannibalize, beg, borrow and steal bits and pieces as they built this train. The workings are accurate and very detailed as well as functioning. As opposed to Bassett-Lowke scale model replicas this piece is a bit simpler in construction and not as “polished” but let’s remember that this was a one of a kind and not a scale model that was made in large numbers like the Bassett Lowke models! A wonderful addition for those that have “backyard” railways or those that would like a true piece of folk art created by ingenious hands many years ago. Accompanying this engine and tender is a trestle created by the same workers and used for display purposes. SIZE: Overall 76″ l x 27-1/2″ h. 6-1/4″ between flanges. CONDITION: Overall very good condition, untested as to working order. 1-10325 (4,000-6,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2010 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price.
