L T HOLMES (American, 19th Century) THE COLUMBIA AT SEA. Oil on canvas marine scene shows a black and red hulled two-mast schooner sailing right to left in windy conditions. The eight-man crew standing on the edge of the deck and the name emblazoned on the stern. The green sea with white caps all under a white cloud and blue sky. Signed lower left “LT Holmes 1885”. Housed in a fine period wide and deep gesso decorated frame with flower motif and gilt liner. The stretcher retaining its original “Frost & Adams Boston” label. SIZE: 22″ x 28″. CONDITION: Craquelure, varnish yellowing, some small repair with inpainting. Otherwise good. 9-97117 (1,750-2,250)
