FINE SCRIMSHAW IVORY & ROSEWOOD WALKING STICK. 2nd half 19th century, American. This nice presentation cane with faceted ivory top knob, polychrome scrimmed with a stylized starfish; each point suspended with an additional starfish. Each facet with a different image; a sailor standing with telescope with crossed whaling irons at his feet followed by a displayed eagle followed by a furled American flag mounted on a halbred, next panel with entwined serpents, an anchor entwined in rope, engraved with “FJT” above “Maker” all beneath the sextant. Next panel with “L. Retreat” in script, next followed by “L.G. Webster”. Mounted to a spiral twist rosewood shaft with silver-mounted strap hole. Spiral twist decoration alternating with simulated rope turnings. SIZE: 38″L CONDITION: Very good overall with normal and expected shrinkage cracks in ivory handle. The carved shaft with undisturbed dark patina. Well polished surfaces. 9-23593 (1,500-2,000)
