CASED NEW HAVEN ARMS POCKET SIZE VOLCANIC PISTOL. Cal. 31. SN 111. Pocket size Volcanic with 3-3/4″ oct bbl with integral magazine tube. It has a blued steel pinched blade front sight & fixed rear sight. Gun metal (brass) frame & sideplates are factory engraved in usual style of flowing foliate arabesque patterns with a light dash & dot border & three sprays of leaves over top three flats at chamber. Lever is blued with hammer case colored & it has 2-pc rosewood grips numbered to pistol. Accompanied by its extremely rare, orig, red velvet, lined walnut casing compartmented in bottom for the pistol, a box of ammunition & a cleaning rod. Cartridge compartment contains an orig lacquered tin lid from a 200-rnd box of #1 cartridges with orig label virtually intact in lid. Also accompanying are two 41 caliber Volcanic rounds. These rare little pistols were made in period 1857-60 with only a total of about 850 ever having been made & few of those were ever cased. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching as noted. The pistol was not further disassembled to check for other matching numbers. Bbl & magazine tube retain 85-88% glossy bright orig blue with lost areas flaked to light patina, not from wear. Receiver retains about 50% orig silver plate with exposed brass a mellow medium patina. Screws & carrier retain most of their orig niter blue. Lever retains 30-40% orig blue, mostly in sheltered areas. Hammer retains about all of its slightly faded orig case colors & grips about all of their orig varnish with a few light nicks & scratches. Lever is a little loose & will not stay against grip & when operated will not put hammer into full cock position, otherwise mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with a very few scattered spots of light pitting. Case has several grain checks in bottom, otherwise is completely sound with a slightly warped lid. Escutcheon is a replacement. Interior is very faded to a yellowish/tan color except where protected by pistol & box lid. Shows light soil from pistol. 4-57635 JR403 (15,000-20,000)
