JULIAN OLIVER DAVIDSON (American, 1853-1894) KEARSARGE VS ALABAMA. Oil on canvas depiction of the Civil War battle between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama. The Alabama is shown in the foreground, the flag being dropped, listing to one side with a salvo exploding off its bow. A lifeboat filled with sailors has left the side of the distressed ship. In the background, broadside, is seen the Kearsarge with flags atop masts and men on deck firing cannons with the resulting billowing white smoke. Signed lower right “J O Davidson NY, 1891″. Housed in a decorative replacement gilt frame. SIZE: 27″ x 35”. PROVENANCE: From a West Virginia Collection. CONDITION: One small hole in center bottom water, relined, inpainting.
